Ariadne's Thread
by James A. McQuiston
Editor/Publisher Celtic Guide magazine March 2019 It's been awhile since we've welcomed a new Celtic-based musical group to our website, and I am very excited to be posting about Ariadne's Thread, a group out of Poland, who has based their music on Celtic, Scandinavian and Eastern European folk music, with a definite modern World Music flavor. I'm particularly happy because I am, myself, a mix of Scottish, Irish, Viking and Polish bloodlines. First, I have to say the musicianship is extraordinary. This music fits in with other music from that area that we've posted in the past under our "Free Music" tab, and is reminiscent of Sandra Elizabeth Mae's work (Austria), Ouberet (out of France), and that of Phoenix (Romania), in particular. And understandably so, since they all harken from the same general area and all share some of the same Celtic background in the distant past of their respective countries. We're pretty proud that our "Free Music" tab is bringing this unique music to many who would never be exposed otherwise. |
Ariadne's Thread is right up there with the best. From their website:
"Ariadne's Thread is an uncommon music project founded in Kraków in early 2018 by Adrianna Zborowska - vocalist, multiinstrumentalist and member of the folk metal band Netherfell. "The following band members are Jan Gałczewski (Beltaine) , Michał Górka (Duo G2), Anton Korolev (Balquemia) and Michał Biel (Pokrzyk). "Ariadne's Thread's music is based on a diverse set of traditional instruments and the complex music interests of it's members. It is an attempt of a fresh look on the folk music through merging a modern form with archaic sound, to create a really atmospheric union. "Ariadne's Thread works are linked to dark and mysterious European folklore, derived from medieval, renaissance, Scandinavian and Celtic music with the elements of the primal pulsating trance and more subtle, courtly approach." It only takes a quick listen to see that these words are true. The musicianship, the driving rhythms, the ancient sounds, and the modern flavor all add up to something great. |
